The
Mothers’ Auxiliary is dedicated to enhancing the community spirit for
all members of Iona Grammar School. Through our yearly dues and the
Christmas Boutique, our annual fund raiser, we fund a number of
enrichment programs which augment the school’s curriculum. In addition
to the enrichment programs, Mothers’ Auxiliary sponsors community
building events such as the Parent-Faculty Cocktail Party, the
Mother-Son Communion Breakfast, the Fat Tuesday Ice Cream Social,
Grandparents’ Day, and the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon.
We look outside the Iona Grammar School
community through our Giving Tree program at Christmas time, which
benefits local charities. Mothers’ Auxiliary assists the school with its
yearly fundraisers, the auction dinner, the book fair, and with the open
houses. We also collect ‘Boxtops
for Education’, which is run as a friendly competition between the
homerooms. Finally, we end
the school year with a thank you luncheon for all volunteers.
Mothers’ Auxiliary meets monthly, usually the first Tuesday of the month in the
school cafeteria. We welcome all volunteers, no matter how much or how little
you can help. It is a great way to
become involved in the most formative years of your son’s life, and, to make
some wonderful friendships that could last beyond your years at IGS

Dear Iona Grammar School
Parents, |
|
This past weekend we celebrated the Feast of the Most Holy
Body and Blood of Christ. For most of us basic food such as
bread and water is not a problem. However, it is a problem
for many people in the world. The poor and needy of the
world can understand better than we do that it is a real
sign of love and care when God intervenes to feed His
people. For them, water and bread are a question of life and
death. But, we are often hungry and thirsty for other values
than sustenance of physical life. In a de-personalized
society we suffer from absence where there should be
presence. We hunger and thirst for companionship, love,
concern, mercy, respect which are no problems in the great
family of primitive people. Whose need is greater? Where we
suffer from absence, the Lord Jesus wants to be present to
us with all the concern and love of a friend for a friend.
In the signs of plain daily food, water, bread, and wine
Jesus indicates what He intends by being present to us. He
wants to share life. He wants to strengthen. He wants to
mean something to you and me. When we celebrate the
Eucharist, we celebrate this mysterious presence of the Lord
Jesus with the community. Open up to make “Communion”
possible. “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood will
live in me and I in him says the Lord.”
It is difficult to believe – this is the final Wednesday
Letter for this school year!
Please remember that today, Wednesday, 6/9 and tomorrow,
Thursday, 6/10 are full days of school with regular
dismissal at 2:35 p.m. Friday of this week, 6/11 is a half
day with dismissal at 11:30 a.m. Monday of next week, 6/14
is a half day also with dismissal at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday of
next week – June 15th – is our final day of school with
dismissal at 11:00 a.m. There will be two (2) Awards
Assemblies on Tuesday, 6/15 – the first at 9:00 a.m. for
grades 3 – 5 and the second at 10:00 a.m. for grades 6 and
7.
On Friday of this week, 6/11, Mrs. Gooljar and Mr. Green
will host the Annual Auction Student Signup event – Pizza
and a Movie (“Alvin and the Chipmunks – The Squeakquel”) -
the event runs from 11:30 a.m. until 2:35 p.m. and the cost
is $25.00 per student and is open to grades 3 – 7 with the
proceeds going to Iona Grammar, since this was a signup
event from our Auction. Sounds like a great afternoon for
gr. 3 – 7 students.
Our 2009 – 2010 Yearbook has been distributed to students
whose parents purchased one at the beginning of the school
year. There are still some yearbooks available for sale if
you wish to purchase one for your son at $85 each. Please
contact Mrs. Powers, our Business Manager.
We are very proud of this year’s Yearbook and are pleased
and honored to have it dedicated to Mrs. Barbara Shattenkirk
– our fourth grade teacher. Congratulations to her on this
well-deserved Dedication. I also wish to thank Mrs. Powers
and Mrs. Gerosa for their hard work and dedication in
producing this fine Yearbook.
Tomorrow evening, Thursday, 6/10 our Sports Awards Dinner
will take place in our gym and cafeteria. The response has
been overwhelming! The dinner begins at 7:00 p.m.
If you are here for the Sports Awards Dinner – please check
out the “Lost and Found” items in the main hallway near the
statue of Jesus. The items that are not claimed by Tuesday
of next week will be sent to the Missions. We have quite a
large collection of uniform and clothing items.
As we begin to close out this year – we begin to turn our
thoughts to the summer and to next year. You will find
enclosed in today’s mail packet a Save the Dates flyer with
the dates for the beginning of school in September, 2010.
Some of the dates shown are New Student Orientation and the
New Parent Welcome on Wednesday, September 1st – the Uniform
Sale also on September 1st. The first day of school for
grades 1 – 8 (which is an Orientation) with dismissal at
11:30 a.m. and the first FULL day of school is on Thursday,
September 9th. I have also attached the Save the Dates flyer
to my e-mail and this letter. Please download the flyer and
keep it for reference. The new school year calendar will be
out mid to end of July.
You will also find the “Summer Reading List” for each grade
enclosed as well.
I wish to make one final request to those who have not had
the opportunity to donate to our Annual Fund Appeal for this
year. If you are able and haven’t made a donation to date
your contribution is most welcome to help us as we come to
the end of our fiscal year. To date our Annual Fund Appeal
has taken in a net of $37,450. Once again, I wish to thank
all who have donated and ask those who haven’t to consider
making a donation as your means will allow. Thank you.
To our current 7th grade – soon to be eighth grade – parents
– we will hold a brief meeting on Monday of next week, June
14th at 11:45 a.m. (immediately after dismissal) to hand out
and explain the TACHS High School Admission Test eighth
graders will take in November of the next school year. We
will also go over the High School Admission Process. The
TACHS information will also be mailed to our current 7th
graders soon to be eighth graders. The meeting will be held
in one of our 8th grade homerooms upstairs.
Last but not least – I am still waiting for some of you to
return your Enrollment Contracts for next year. Please – it
makes it very difficult to plan for next year. Thank you.
May you have a wonderful Summer filled with joy and
relaxation.
Yours in
the Risen Christ,
