The Iona Grammar Chess Team played in the Westchester County Scholastic Chess Championships on Saturday, March 10, at Ward School in New Rochelle . The Primary Team led by Connor Riddell, Antonio Dell’orto, and Brandon Kersting tied for second place. The Middle School team – grades 6 and 7 – led by Mark Marzziotti took first place and are the Westchester County Middle School Champions. The Junior High School/ High School team – grades 8 – 12 – were led by Ho Jae Cha, Matt Schwalbenberg, and Kenneth Crisco. The team captured first place and are the Westchester County Junior High/ High School champions.

Iona Grammar School Chess team WINS First Place in NYS Scholastic Chess Championships and win title 2006 NYS Junior HS Chess Champion - June 2006 |
| The
Iona Grammar School chess team played in the New York State Scholastic
Chess Championships, which were held at New Rochelle High School on
Saturday and Sunday.
The team won first place and are the 2006 New York State Junior High School Chess Champions. Over 1000 students participated in this event. Individually: Austyn Wells, Manuel Damirchi, Tommy Petriccione and Rishabh Alam won 3 out of 5 games. Kenneth Crisco scored 3 ½ points. Franklyn Rose won 4 games. Timmy Petriccione scored 4 ½ out 5 and captured second place in the Junior High School Section. Ho Jae Cha scored 3 out of 5 in the Championship section. Joseph St. Onge scored 3 out of 6 in the Elementary section. 3rd Grader Patrick Young won 4 out of 6 games in the Primary section. The chess team won the Westchester County championships two years ago. This is the first time the team has won the state championship. |

Iona's First Ever National Champion
Matthew Schwalbenberg won the K - 5 under 900 National Scholastic Chess Championship, held in Pittsburgh, PA. Congratulations, Matthew!!

Mr. Martinetti and Mr. Blanco would like to thank all the members of the Iona Grammar Chess Team and their parents for our most successful year to date! We had 14 first place finishes - including the Westchester County Championship - Middle School!
Additionally, there were 4 second place finishes and 3 third place awards.
