IGS Shows Great Determination vs. Brunswick on Thursday
(10/13):
Iona Grammar School football took on Brunswick Academy’s
larger 8th grade football team and jumped to an early lead
on exceptional running by Gavin Adin and a perfect long pass
from courageous QB Matt Valecce to wide receiver Christian
Nigro. But Brunswick, larger and with many more players,
fought back to take a 6 point lead at half time. In the
second half Iona did their best to battle but Brunswick’s
size took a toll an Iona went down in defeat. A number of
Iona players excelled, from those already mentioned to John
Rooney, Ryan Eskierski, Chris Verre, and Jordan Dell'Orto.
IGS Varsity Football Team Wins Home Opener:
The
Iona Grammar Varsity football team came into its home opener
vastly outnumbered by a strong King Low Heywood Thomas team
and yet came out with a resounding 38-6 victory. Offense set
the tone early under the outstanding leadership of QB Matt
Valecce. Running back and linebacker Gavin Adin scored early
running with great determination through one defender after
another. Gavin would score two touchdowns on the day.
Sure-handed and fleet-footed Christian Nigro caught two
touchdown passes, while 7th grader Chris Verre took a
perfect short pass 40 yards for another score – all thrown
on-the-mark by Matt. The offensive line played tough, with
flawless snaps from center Alex Weider, combined with
hole-opening blocking from guards Adam Mobarek and Ryan
Eskierski, tackles Louis Blackwell and John Rooney with Jay
Tobin on tight end.
Defense was equally impressive, showing great discipline and
tackling skills anchored by Gavin at middle linebacker, a
gutsy performance by Owen Byrnes at outside linebacker, and
Jay at monster who had the game’s only interception. Up
against a large and tenacious KLHT offensive line, nose
guard John Rooney had countless tackles along with defensive
linemen Ryan, Adam, Alex, Jordan Dell'Orto, Daniel Antoine
and on ends Louis and Chris. Defensive backs were locked on,
with cornerbacks Marty Durkin, Christian, and safeties
Justin Ricciardi and Jack Coogan all coming up with big
tackles to shut down the KLHT offense. “What we lack in
numbers, we make up for in heart and discipline, said head
coach Frank Picone. “Were off to a good start.”
