Dear Parents
and
Guardians,
St. Columba left his native Ireland and traveled the North
Sea for two years seeking an Isle to establish a monastery.
Columba and his 12 monks landed on the Isle of Iona and
established a center for Celtic Spirituality and Classical
Scholarship. The monks from Iona traveled all through Europe
bringing this unique combination of spirit and intellect.
Blessed Edmund Rice in the late 1700's Ireland established a
unique type of education opened to the poor of Waterford
affording a deepening of the person in spirit, mind and body.
Edmund Rice was also followed by men who wished to dedicate
themselves to God through vows and "To Do and To Teach." This
tradition of education is still the mainstay for Edmund Rice
Christian Brothers throughout the world.
Brother Joseph I. Doorley was one such Christian Brother who
founded and established the Iona Schools in 1916 in New
Rochelle, and the work of all these men is carried out today at
Iona Grammar School where educated women and men have dedicated
their lives to the education of boys and young men. This quality
education addresses the very values that Columba, Edmund Rice
and Joseph Doorley inculcated the development of the entire
person: spirit, soul, mind and body.
Iona Grammar School presents itself as an American, Catholic
Grammar School where the tenets of the teachings of Jesus Christ
are inculcated with American values and high academic
scholarship to enable each student to be treated as an
individual and encouraged to succeed within the framework of his
own individual person.
We welcome students and their families who seek to take
advantage of this unique all boys’ school and are ready and able
to master the curriculum, embrace the spirit, and embody what an
Iona Grammar School education is all about.
With every good wish and blessing for our entire Iona Grammar
School community, I welcome you to visit our community and
witness this unique opportunity for American, Catholic
education.
In Christ,
Brother J. Kevin Devlin CFC; Ed.D
Head of School
